A fine and thorough centennial history of the Southland settlement and district. It begins with the early runs being taken up. Then describes gold mining days when the rich gold field was known as Switzers. It includes a chapter on the Chinese miners, some of whom were very successful. After the rushes were over pastoral and horticultural farms were developed and forestry established. Interesting photographs, including early settlers, and a folding map. Uncommon.
