Vanished Kingdoms. A Woman Explorer in Tibet, China & Mongolia 1921-1925.
Mabel Cabot.
The story of a remarkable young American woman, Jane Elliott Wulsin and her husband Frederick Wulsin, who made intrepid journeys to remote regions of China and Inner Mongolia in the 1920s. They travelled across the Gobi desert, through mountains to Kansu, and visited several great Tibetan lamaseries including Kumbum, Labrang and Choni, all now destroyed. They then made a yak skin raft journey down the Yellow River carrying with them the fourteen hundred zoological and botanical specimens they had collected. The whole expedition was recorded in Jane’s journals and with Frederick’s fine photographs. Some of these images are reproduced here, especially a possibly unique group of hand coloured lantern slides that include interior views of Buddhist temples. A wonderful record of a now lost world. Printed on fine heavy paper this is a large book.
