Hochstetter and Haast travelled on foot and by horseback in the vast hinterland of colonial Auckland documenting its geology, natural history and the Maori population at a time when the region was little known to European science. Later they also explored Nelson Province. Their endeavours made the scientific reputation of each, Hotchstetter in Austria and Haast in Canterbury. This fine and illustrated book is an important contribution to the history of science in New Zealand.
