Biography of a most interesting early Canterbury run holder, pioneer naturalist and conservationist. Potts was a natural history polymath and part of the nascent colonial scientific establishment. He was an early advocate for forest protection and conservation and was the first to propose island sanctuaries for endangered native birds. He collected herbarium specimens of South Island alpine plants and corresponded with Hector, Kirk and Cheesman. Includes previously unpublished sections of his 1850s diary. He became best known for his natural history writing under the title Out in the Open, eleven of these engaging essays are published here. Thomas Potts died in 1888.
