Collingwood Ingram, known as “Cherry” visited Japan in 1902 and again in 1907. He fell in love with cherry blossom trees or sakura and took home hundreds of cuttings for a collection he made in his garden. On a return visit to Japan in 1926 he found that local varieties were in decline and some had become extinct. Over the next decades he repatriated many cherry varieties and became the leading expert on flowering cherry trees. This is his story.
