A history of the road from Canterbury to the West Coast through Arthur’s Pass. At the time of the first coach to successfully complete the journey from Christchurch to Hokitika in 1866 the road was rightly regarded as an engineering and construction feat of some significance. It was hoped that gold from the coast would be carried to Christchurch by this new route but this largely failed to eventuate. Here is the story of the building of the road and much of it’s subsequent history. This copy signed by the author.
