The detailed story of Able Tasman who encountered the west coast of New Zealand whilst searching for ‘the Great South Land’ in two ships on behalf of the Dutch East India Company. After a brief and bloody encounter with Maori in Golden Bay he sailed back to Batavia. Also the story of Isaac Gilsemans, one of Tasman’s more important  companions, who drew the surprisingly accurate coastal profiles published in the official Dutch account of the 1642-3 voyage.
