The once glorious garden at Heligan, in the mild climate of Cornwall, was owned and developed by the wealthy Tremayne family. It was an expression of Victorian confidence, energy and enthusiasm for the formal garden, and for collecting and growing new and rare plants from the far corners of the world. Following the First World War the magnificent garden, and its buildings, were largely abandoned and fell into decline and ruin over the next 70 years. In 1990 the author began a journey of discovery and extensive restoration that resulted in the lost garden of Heligan becoming one of the most visited in the UK.
