The narrative in part one of the book encompasses the entire three year voyage of the Endeavour on which Joseph Banks was the botanist. He intended to publish an illustrated record of all the new plants he collected, including those from New Zealand. Part two of the book is the story of this Florilegium, finally published two hundred years later. There are sixteen colour plates from the Florilegium.
