Mark Laird.
Between 1760 and 1840 many new and exotic plants were imported to Britain and lavishly illustrated in the botanical publications of the time. Botany and horticulture were fundamental parts of scientific and economic activity and this was also manifest in early New Zealand settler culture. The author describes interesting aspects of this botanical history and then devotes fully one third of the book to documenting Britain’s historical relationship with the New Zealand flora and how this can be reinterpreted now. A fascinating, original, sometimes polemical, and always beautifully illustrated work.
