Anthony Crawforth.
A biography of Henry Bates, a contemporary of Wallace and Darwin, who spent the years 1848-59 traveling, observing and collecting insects in the Brazilian Amazon. During this time he amassed an enormous collection of entomological specimens and formulated important scientific theory. After his return to Britain he began sorting and publishing his collection, announcing his theory of insect mimicry in 1862. His book, The Naturalist on the River Amazon, is now considered a classic of nineteenth century scientific travel writing. He ended his career as assistant secretary to the Royal Geographic Society.
