The illustrated story of the ill fated attempt to establish farms in the remote Mangapurua valley of the upper Wanganui River. From 1917 some forty returned soldiers and their families pioneered their farms here. The conditions were so severe that they abandoned the land, the last leaving in 1942. The land swiftly reverted to bush with only the bridge remaining. First published in 1981 this is the fifth edition.
