The Bauers. Masters of Botanical Illustration. NEW.
Hans Walter Lack.
The three Austrian brothers Joseph, Franz and Ferdinand Bauer are widely regarded as the most accomplished and capable botanical artists of all time. They were active during the golden age of botanical discovery in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. This book describes their lives and their work. Franz Bauer was, for fifty years, the first resident artist based at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, whilst Ferdinand is known for his extensive travels and work in Australia with Robert Brown, as well as travels in the Levant. Joseph was director of the Art Gallery of the Prince of Liechtenstein in Vienna. The book is illustrated throughout with the brother’s superb artwork. Published in conjunction with the Bauer exhibition at the Natural History Museum, London. A very large and heavy book.
