Shackleton’s Captain. A Biography of Frank Worsley.
John Thomson.
Frank Worsley (1872-1943) was born in Akaroa and grew up in Christchurch, he studied navigation and became a mariner. He was a member of the Endurance 1914-16 antarctic expedition of Ernest Shackleton. In 1915 the ship became trapped in pack ice and eventually sank, stranding the crew on Elephant Island. Worsley achieved lasting fame by navigating a small boat to the whaling station on South Georgia, across 800 miles of antarctic seas, to raise the alarm and effect the eventual rescue of all members of the Endurance crew. Worsley went on to have a distinguished wartime career. This is the first published biography of a great adventurer.
