Originally based on a series of articles written for the Lyttelton Times and published in book form in 1910, this second edition was substantially revised with much new material added, there are 99 photographs. Cockayne’s book deals with the plant life of New Zealand as a whole and describes it along ecological lines. It was a pioneering work that soon became a classic and was for many years the standard text on the subject. This second edition is the first of a series of manuals that were published by the Board of Science and Art. A fourth edition of this important book was published as late as 1967.
