An extremely interesting book that describes North Otago as it was in the 19th and early 20th centuries when the evidence of Maori occupation had not yet been obliterated by pakeha settlement and modern farming. There are details of the rock paintings and shelters as they were and also details of local Maori place names and legendary stories. The final section deals with the earliest pakeha and includes previously unpublished extracts from the diaries of Rev. Charles Creed and W. B .D Mantell. Some interesting illustrations and an index. Scarce.
