John Lindley 1799-1865. Gardener, Botanist and Pioneer Orchidologist.
John Lindley 1799-1865. Gardener, Botanist and Pioneer Orchidologist.
Edited by William Stearn.
An interesting and well illustrated account of a most eminent horticulturalist. John Lindley was a Professor of Botany and an accomplished botanical artist and writer. He was a diligent secretary of the Horticultural Society of London (now the Royal Horticultural Society) for many years, and his collection of books formed the basis of the modern RHS Lindley Library. He was instrumental in saving the Royal Botanic Garden at Kew from destruction due to Government indifference and provided an inspirational vision for its development into an important scientific institution. Today he is primarily remembered as a pioneer orchidologist. His publications on the classification, description and naming of orchids remain important. This book was published on the bi-centennial of Lindey’s birth.
