The story of these pioneer Canterbury settlers and run holders who played a considerable part in the early days of the settlement. John was a naturalist of great ability and corresponded with the influential scientific people of the day. He was also involved with Julius von Haast and the establishment of the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch. His brother, Charles, made watercolour paintings of the scenery around the run, many of which are illustrated here. The famous botanical painter Marianne North stayed at Castle Hill when visiting the South Island.
