This was the first comprehensive gardening manual specifically written for local gardeners and local conditions. It includes chapters on all the anticipated topics as well as a pioneering four pages on New Zealand native plants. There are three lithograph plates. The author was a prominent figure in early Canterbury and a version of the book was first published in 1885; this is the enlarged and partially re-written third edition. This copy has occasional underlining and a newspaper clipping pasted on page 21, see scan.
