This was the first comprehensive gardening manual specifically written for local gardeners and local conditions. It includes chapters on all the anticipated topics as well as a pioneering six pages on New Zealand plants. There are woodcut illustrations and a few photographs. The author was a prominent figure in early Canterbury and a version of the book was first published in 1885, this is the enlarged and partially re-written fourth edition.
