A superb and authoritative history of the books and albums of pressed specimens produced during the Victorian fascination with ferns or 'pteridomania’ as it has been called. This fashion was predominant in Britain and its colonies, nowhere more so than in New Zealand where it reached its peak in the 1870s. Nearly one third of this study is devoted to New Zealand fern books and their publishers, including the celebrated cyanotype ‘blue books, of Herbert Dobbie. Very fine colour illustrations throughout.
