It describes how, during the last 1.8 million years, the climate has oscillated between warm and cool, producing environmental changes throughout most of the basin. The importance of Pacific volcanism and tectonics is also explained in detail. The environmental effects of human activity, that began about 12,000 years ago, are discussed in detail. Diagrams and photographs. The author was Professor of Geoscience at the University of the South Pacific.
