ENDLESS FORMS. Charles Darwin, Natural Science and the Visual Arts.
Edited by Diana Donald and Jane Monro.
This superb book describes Darwin’s links with artistic tradition and his impact on the visual arts in Europe and America in the nineteenth century. Twelve essays by distinguished authors explore art and science in a completely original way. This is the first book ever to do this and includes painting, drawing, prints and photography. It is an outstanding contribution to the history of art, and of evolution, with many extremely interesting illustrations. Publication accompanied the exhibition with the same title at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. The exhibition included the 1878 portrait of the Māori Chief Ngairo Rakai Hikuroa by Gottfried Lindauer. A large heavy book.
