A biography of Scotsman David Douglas who was a plant collector for the Horticultural Society of London, and who set out, in 1824, to explore Western Canada. For the next ten years he travelled throughout the vast land collecting its flora and observing its inhabitants. He was the first European to describe and collect seed of 210 species, one of which, the Douglas fir, now bears his name. He walked 10,000 miles, often alone, and finally returned home to great acclaim.
