In this unusual book a Kalam man from the Kaironk Valley, Shrader Range, Central Highlands, New Guinea, describes 137 birds living in his home district. He also describes 6 species of bat. He not only details the appearance and habits of the birds (including birds of paradise) and the bats, but also relates bird lore to many aspects of the life and thought of his people; to hunting, gardening, ceremonials, mythology and magic. There are 18 pen and ink drawings of birds, black and white photographs and location maps. Scarce book.
