Beyond the Roaring Forties. New Zealand’s Sub-Antarctic Islands.
Conon Fraser.
A comprehensive account of the natural history and the human history of these remote islands to the south of New Zealand. The islands were visited by Joseph Hooker on an exploring voyage in the years 1839-1843, and he published his discoveries in Botany of an Antarctic Voyage. Eighty Flowering Plants were found, a small number, but consisting of species more remarkable for their beauty and novelty than the flora of any other country can show.” Other, more recent, scientific expeditions to the islands are also detailed. Fine photographs and some good maps complement the interesting text, introduction by Sir Peter Scott. A large heavy book.
