A Vision of Eden. The Life and Work of Marianne North.
Brenda Moon.
The intrepid botanical artist Marianne North made an epic series of tours from Britain to North and South America, South Africa, India and Ceylon, South East Asia, Japan and Australasia. The story of these journeys is recounted here in an abridged version of her own memoirs. She wished to make a painted record of the tropical and exotic plants of the world and the result was an astonishing collection of over 800 paintings, now housed in the Marianne North Gallery at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. In 1881 she made a visit to New Zealand, traveling in both islands and staying with influential friends of her family such as her cousin John Enys of Castle Hill, Canterbury. She was particularly charmed by the NZ alpine flora of the Otira Gorge. The book has magnificent colour reproductions of her paintings throughout.
